My internet is down at home. So not been online much.
Wanted to post reviews of Sivakasi, Maja, Shaadi No.1. But due to time constraints and the fact that my Sivakasi story has to appear on print first, here’s the gist of it till I get a chance to update in detail.
Sivakasi: Super-duper fun. Just a coupla cribs though: Sentiment overdone, just too many sexist lines (We have to blame Superstar for showing the way!). But for that, I think Sivakasi packs more punches and punchlines than Tirupaachi or any Ilaya Thalapathy movie. Ilaya Thalapathy is brilliant in doing a Superstar act, it’s like watching a 90s Thalaivar superhit movie… the build-up song, the comedy, the savaal and the rise to power of the simpleton… all told with plenty of tributes to Superstar. What’s good about Vijay is he doesn’t merely copy, he takes it one step forward with his own charm and interpretation of style, punch-lines and even manifests it in his dance and costumes… More superstar than superstar himself. He’s surely the prince! I only wish Perarasu had made this with Superstar 10 years ago, it wud’ve run 500 days! Now, it will probably run 250!
Watched it again last night. The movie is a blast. Entertainment guaranteed. Almost lost my throat screaming during the first day first show.
Maja: Vikram does a Simbu. I totally hated the finger-gimmicks. He says: “Maja pannu” about 254 times in the movie that after a point of time, you really wanna ask him to shove it up. I know he did a similar finger stunt in Gemini too but here it’s sooo wannabe Little Superstar. I soooo wish Vikram goes back to Dharani and does a coupla films. He seems to be losing it. Nothing wrong with his acting at all just that the movie just doesn’t make sense.
‘Maja’ tries to fuse a ‘Vanathapolae’ sentiment-laden story with a ‘Dhool’ sensibility, and in the process gets confused between the genres. So as a result, we have a very inconsistent, yawn-inducing narrative alternating between Visu-movie ‘thaali’ sentiment scenes and a rustic rowdy stunts. The first half is tolerable thanks to a delightful Pasupathy doing comedy in tandem with Manivannan (his comic timing rocks) and Vadivelu (who totally rocks in that one scene where he walks in slow motion after Vikram challenges the village headman, almost spoofing the movie itself). Staying on during the second half is suicide. I really hope he regains his lost form signing up with Dharani, probably the only director apart from Hari (in Saamy) who has been able to mould him into a macho hero. It’s also Asin’s weakest role till date. She gets totally wasted in this movie and watching Vikram feel her up in ‘Chi chi’ doesn’t really help you feel better either.
Shaadi No.1: I love David Dhawan. Even liked his last movie Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya. Then imagine how bad the movie would be if I say Shaadi No.1 sucked. It’s Sanjay Dutt silliest role with him getting to mouth the saddest lines to be ever written in the most terrible Punjabi accent heard on screen off late. He comes up with over two dozen (yes! About 24) limericks and most of them barring one or two make you squirm.
Here’s another one about three married men with beautiful wives uninterested in sex trying to find extra-marital entertainment (Yawn!) Inspite of the movie having over half a dozen drool-worthy babes, you really can’t watch this beyond the first 20 minutes. The only time I laughed was watching Zayed Khan dressed as Spiderman rescuing damsel in distress. But like Abhishek Bachchan (Yuva) / Madhavan (Aayitha Ezhuthu) says: Why buy the whole wine shop for want of a bottle?
To be updated…
pick of the lot has gotta be AOKK, that is if u like the 80s style of film making, a refreshing movie, not the usual punch dialogue crap. definatly better than the ones uve mentioned. cherans flick or kasturimaan mite be better, lets c.
by the way if u like masala philims like sivakasi u mite not like AOKK
but if ur comparing sivakasi and maja id rather watch maja,
only vijay fans can watch his movies no i else can, avanukku oru thani track. last watchable vijay film was Ghilli.
and dont compate super star and vijay, vijay is crap compared to suepr star. vijay is a disgusting copy of thalaivar, a horrible clone.
PS sivakasi will run 200 days at kamals (i am told vijay owns it)
suder,
wht r u trying to say that sivakasi is a better pilm ahh? if that’s the case from the reveiws i have read it doesn’t state so atleast.
machi indha 200days kadhai yellam yennaikkum therium…LOL!as long as vijay keeps giving films like these in which he tries to attract the masses there is no point, it’s time people get into acting!
maja is definetly watchable if you consider all those vijay dialogues with those bra & jetty crap! i m in no way against vijay, infact i beleive he did extremely gud for himself in gilli, but its time he did something different!
super stars are made not by giving themself the titles!

Ok, so took your advice and watched Sivakasi. Totally loved it. An all out entertainer. Another feel good movie (money well spent).
Oh – and also watched Garam Masala. Another Malayalam movie rip-off. Just goes to show that Bollywood is falling short on the creative-o-meter. A hot star cast, and they still can’t pull it off! Gawd!
gilli copy of okkadu -telugu and people seem to like that movie?…
sivakaasi..did not see yet…no comments…most of vijay’s film’s music comes from telugu movies too…mass hero-yes he is, and better than others in tamil for sure…Vikaram and Surya – a body builders dance- cant compare to Vijay. Simbu and Dhanush – fresh starters… Superstar comparison? better stop doing it…cos ajith might give one more statement ” I am the next superstar”…Rajini’s acting skills were good in his initial art movies than the mass movies he made later…but unless you make mass movies..you don’t get the money…while doing a mass movie..people need to be careful either don’t over do it or make it too serious….Rajini understood the formula…the perfect balance -punch dialogues, hero worship, limiting to one or 2 senti scenes, loads of comedy, one climax fight and 1 intro fight/song, second and third love songs, one in india(indoor), one in a beautiful scenery – or a fusion of 2, beautiful heroine/s ( or made to look beautiful), fourth song telling about life/way to lead it, fifth one acting as a buffer/ filler…story is 3/4 th over already…all you need is a title and some subject to fill the gaps….(but if this gap is not filled properly – movie certainly flops) :)…
Mollywood and Collywood do nothing but turn the clock in the past and fool the emotions of dumb Hindian public .
If only one had good brains , he would not watch most of the crap these guys produce. It is no pun
intended.
They only cater to the Uneducated crowd, sadly every body ends up watching and end up in crooked thoughts.
all comments to this post will be answered by box office figures of the films mentioned!
🙂
Even me laughd only 4 dat zayed khan scene… in fact, i felt he was da only one tryin 2 act among some wooden faces!
btw, watch garam masala! u ll hv fun, for sure!
Comeon majaa was definitely a good movie-are you against vikram or something-if that was the reason for a bad review-then thats sad.
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD
vasanthi:
i figured later that women wud like the movie more than men. seems to be packaged for thaikulam. and if u read the review ive written that there’s nothing wrong with vikram’s acting in maja. i hated his performance in anniyan. here, its his choice of movie that i criticised. so ur criticism seems to be baseless.
and i hope he does a movie with dharani cuz he s the only director who seems to know to use vikram to his strength… and i loved vikram in dhil, dhool and even in saamy. i thot he hammed his way thru in pitamagan and anniyan. subtle suits him more than loud. which is why he’s ok in maja but maja as a whole wasnt engaging enuff… i remember a restless audience during the second half… and i still dont understand how women in this day and age still fall for thaali sentiment… the scene where he ties her the thali and the later scene where he argues that she’s rich and he’s poor and hence he cannot fulfil the marriage is ridiculous. even more ridiculous is the fact that a feminist heroine like asin (ghajini, sivakasi) ruins her prototype by saying she wil not let him take the thaaali cuz the thaali is sacred… come on, these scenes for me are reason enuff to think it was really poor screenwriting and direction. and it amazes me that women still buy such movies ful of Visu/P.Vasu sentiment from the 80s and 90s!!
Guys:
This is an absolutely wasted discussion. I dont think the movie field should get carried away by this ‘Super Star’ comparision BS. I think even Rajni learnt a good lesson with Baba.No good story line- No Hit – Super Star or not.
While Maja was that it was a good pot boiler with Sentiment thrown in and Sivakasi was a lot of ‘ Macho’ thrown in – With Vijai insulting women and usual dialogues of women in her place etc. 2 different audiences. Ying and the Yang.
I agree to your comment that Asin was wasted in Maja. As for the feeling up…Vikram can feel me up any time.

naataamai vandhaachu theerpu sola!
Its absolute waste in comparing Ilaiyathalaivali (oh… avar thalapathyo)with Superstar….
