It is indeed unfortunate that the fledgling Lok Paritran has split, and this is not a good thing for hundreds of youth from the city who slogged their ass off to campaign for the party. This is a big blow to youth like Praveen, Incognito and their desire to change the system.
It’s a combination of internal politics and inexperience that has led to this huge setback and it remains to be seen if the party formed by former IITians will stand the test of character.
A friend recently brought my attention to this blog that claimed to be an expose on the LP founder Tanmay Rajpurohit. It is indeed a pretty well studied analysis but the fact that the author has not allowed comments makes one suspect foul play and malice.
When I did my first interview with these guys, Tanmay did tell me he was a mainstream politican party worker for a brief while and he quit it because it was corrupt. He had then refused to name the party because it was irrelevant and I had told him that it would some day surface. He just smiled then. I doubt if he likes these accusations now.
Going by the “expose,” it turns out that maybe it was the right-winged party known for its hidden agenda and Hindu fanaticism that he once worked for. But the important point here is that HE USED TO WORK FOR IT.
While WHAT ONE USED TO think in the past may not be all that important with the formation of a new party based on a development and growth based ideology, it is important to identify the DNA of a party.
Knowing the roots helps people become a little more aware of what the party could grow into. The transparency which the party promised in governance was missing in the DNA.
In hindsight it does seem to be a bad decision to rush into action by interviewing wannabe do-gooders, without really having any clue of how trustworthy their selected candidates were.
When I spoke to Elanthirumaran, State party president, when he was chosen, I asked him if he had quit his job. He said he had taken a break. That is not what inspires party workers. But maybe the party trusted him enough. The dude did come across as a well-meaning guy with good intentions after all.
He along with Rajamany, the Anna Nagar candidate who got over 10,000 votes thanks to LP being alloted Captain’s symbol of the drum in the constituency, are the rebels who have alleged high-handedness of the party core group.
We from the media had a good enough reason to support Lok Paritran. They had the drive and raw passion clubbed with intelligence and good intentions. They still do. The main guys from the party had given up their lucrative careers to take a plunge into politics, had settled for hand-to-mouth existence and travelling by autorickshaws, rented small apartments far away from their homes and spoke very clearly about what they wanted to do and why they wanted to do it asap. “When you want to do good for the nation, the earlier you can, the better,” they contended.
Fair enough. Besides, we from the media knew that if we rubbished a fledgling youth party, no young person ever would want anything to do with politics. When most engineers were happy taking the next flight abroad, here was a group of committed young people. Of course, we had to support them. Like I said in my post asking for people to support LP, if you don’t encourage the first man who tried something good, how will you give the courage to those who follow.
In their enthusiasm, they swung into action, interviewed scores of people they did not know personally and found able candidates in Rajamany and Elanthirumaran.
Post election, they realised they were betrayed by the very people they trusted. All in the game. Every new party will have starting trouble, especially with the inexperience.
But this is now time to learn from the mistakes and start from scratch if they still intend to do good. The youth should not get discouraged by such setbacks. LP or any other youth party can learn from some of these mistakes.
First, LP or any new youth party needs to make their roots public, with past record in politics, even if it was just two weeks or two months in a party they no longer can relate to. If you promise transparency in governance, first demonstrate that within the party.
Second, LP or any new youth party needs a few management and communication professionals to handle administration of the party itself and to design marketing communications. A political party is like any other organisation, it needs to be run and expanded. Techies and geeks could do with management and marketing help.
Third, if you want people to vote for you, you need time to tell them you are around and demonstrate what you can do for them. LP or any other youth party should begin preparations for next elections NOW… not months before the next election. You need to reach out to the people, understand their problems and introduce yourself. Like what Captain did. Phenomenal work. And that did pay dividends… About 27 lakh people voted for a party based on one man’s hard work, 8.4 per cent of the total votes polled is phenomenal, given that even MGR took years to establish himself.
There is no substitute for hard work. Let the youth not give up this soon. It’s time to learn. And keep walking ahead.
All the best LP. I want to see you guys come through clean in your darkest hour. Given all your good intentions, I hope you don’t become an example of why the youth shouldn’t take to politics as many of your critics have said and will continue to.
Great article..Just like yourself, we all continue to hold our faith in LP and continue to believe that they are here to stay.

I didn’t even bother to go through that blog on Raj Purohit coz the guy who blogs is the worst troll I’ve seen in recent times. Worse than the maanga chap coz this is not just plain hatred.
He’s been going around in orkut generating heated debates in all of the LP and associated communities giving links to his blogs, more of spamming.
So, no respect for whatever crap he pukes.
newayz, hopes crushed. to a certain extent. It’s all a trust based game. WYSINWYG definitely. We cannot blame the younger generation too. They DID support in a way unheard of in TN’s history. They all get sucked up don’t they? But, the hope still continues. It was kindled by LP and if not for LP, I am quite sure we’ll have major developments in the coming years in Indian politics. God bless the country.
hmm. as for the bit the purohit exposed blog where he accuses tanmay of being a hindutva fanatic, well a proper read into the web site and his seminar actually shows us that he was against extremist measures and he was merelyy delivering a lecture… and LP did pretty ok, considerin they managed 10,000 votes in some places which is a good start!! i hope they see the light at the end of the tunnel pretty soon too
Hi sudeesh,
again a great post with a lot of thought….
i am seeing a lot of turbulence among the bloggers about the people who have left and the party split……
why do they expect things to be so smooth or some mistake had happenned if 3 leave the party after elections….
you can be sad….i dont understand why anger….
anyway…great work ….as usual
karthik
im wid dem…even if they walk away…lolz…its a gud start…lets not sit on r asses n keep disecting stuff…our old politicians r dyin doin dat…we’d rather do sumthin dan jus sitn discuss always….time 4 action like the kids call it des days…;)
Nice Article
You really didn’t like the LP splitting up did you? Newayz, the point LP has to learn from the election experience is that the people are ready to support them and the main thing is they should put their personal egos and gains behind them locked up in a dungeon.
You just can’t expect every human to be as you like and again, this incident stands testimony to the fact that even the bestest of frenz aren’t predictable wen it cumes to money…
All the Very Best LP.
If we stood by them when they joined, we should stay by them when they have trouble.
And I wanted to know what really happened. Not curious .. but concerned. These guys half fulfilled our dreams..
I was waiting for an official press statement.. And finally it came in todays paper..
It is a blow.. yes..
so what would happen now..
The ones who were against before.. are gonna take anon avathars and start all over again..
A note to all of u anonymous commentators(the against ones),
here you go .. another chance to flog and flaunt ur ego to say “See,I told u before itself”
“I told u, they did not have experience”..
What has happened might dampen the party. Not our spirit for want of change.
As Karthik mentioned, it looks like a case of ego before party, which is very common among people not used to doing community work. Any kind of community work is thankless, the act in itself should be a sufficient dessert. If they want to be put on a pedestal for what they do, then they are not in the right field. That is a major problem in TN politics.
In fact, wherever you see an Indian association in the US., there is always a split sooner or later, and always due to ego.
BTW, if anyone comes in contact with that Aravind guy who contested in T. Nagar, please do drop a note in my blog. He is an old friend I lost touch with.
LP or any other youth party should begin preparations for next elections NOW…
i second your thought…
and guys don’t go too hard on the break away fraction just leave them alone….
else this will be the beginning of the next generation of vendetta politics

Hi Sudhish,
Exactly my thoughts. From day one, I know for a fact that lok paritran would fail in the elections. Their total lack of awareness of ground realities being the prime reason.
Infact, I did not care for their victory anyway. Looking at their the website, they could as well be discussing metaphysics there. Their party would have been worth a glance, if they had discussed some basic issues in their manifesto. Their main expertise is problem solving. With that in mind,
a) if they had discussed, how to offer a short and long-term solution for water problem. Middle class would have interested in them.
b) if they had discussed, the problems of slum dwellers, interacted with them, put together a solution for atleast couple of problems that they face and presented it.
If well intentioned, educated people is all it takes to make a governance in India, with Manmohan singh and Abdul kalaam at the helm, india should already be a super power.
Y dont they associate themselves to Captain VijayKanth? He looks to be more promising than LP
Hi Sudhish,
Nice post..hope those guys read it..and more than that its hard for any new party in TN to establish themselves in short time amidst the dravidian parties..Its a long journey for these guys if they want to make an impression among all classes of the public…if they r so immature handling some basic aspects then imagine how they r gonna rule the state with larger responsibilities…In simple words..this group was formed to fight against all the other existing,non-cooperative,corrupt parties, but today the group itself has another faction against it which is not a good start..I am afraid but I dont see a future for these parties, and even if it is too early, I have lost my confidence on these people!!!!
For all u LP’s: Try to act like matured and responsible youths…Do u think any one would vote for u to rule the state at this point???? u r not doing any good to all the youngsters who r seeking inspirations from u IIT’ians to plunge in to politics!! If u really feel that u want to do something good for the people then start fighting for the public and quit fighting among urself!!
totally wid u incognito…nan sense bais…
‘Knowing the problem is knowing the solution’ – LP idealogy as described in their website
Does LP really know what they have done and intend to do?
Chella’ article may smack of malice but it does provide another perspective-
Our makkal dont need discourse on knowledge systems, and levels of abstraction as indicated in the LP website, Rs 2/kg sugar works.
LP seems too classy for the masses and i agree with renu’s view that it takes not just educated ppl but ppl who know the problems of common ppl – does LP know that?
‘Knowing the problem is knowing the solution’ – LP idealogy
Hey Sudish
Well said dude.. It seems. my mom actually confronted one of the LP party member about their strategy for campaigning. Out came the reply that they are using emails. But when my mom, who has been using emails only for the last 5 years told that guy that campaigning by email was the stupidest mode ever heard as it doesnt reach the bunch of people who vote but dont have access to computers, the LP folk didnt have any clue.. While anyone can accept with hands down that IIT ians have some brain, we can accept in the same way that IIT ians also lack PR skills..Hope this debacle clears some air for LP and give it a chance to spring up again..
Sriram
hey, great post…we really need more people like these guys, I know for a fact how much thay’re appreciated among the student community…lotsa guys here want to join their party…or atleast contribute in some way…
hmmm.. sudish… r we really rite in supportin a fledgling group jus becos it is a fledgling? i feel the lp deserve this fall because all they ever reached to the public was tht a desperate “we will better the existing system”, never clearly establishing “how” they wld go abt it.
and with the current happenings, they have categorically proven how they lie along placks not much different from the system they fervently opposed.
excellent post!
very restrained and thought provoking, but i am really pissed off by the lack of communication from the top office bearers of LP in this issue.
What the heck r they doin in bangalore?
I heard they r busy starting chapters…
i hope they return to chennai bfore they lose whatever remaining ppl and goodwill they’ve acquired by now..
sudhish inspite of all the support we give,
aarasiyal ku vandha aarasiyal pannanom, adu pannati, the katchi wont survive.
i went for their meeting, came out disheartened with the party!! totally doomed to failure,
http://ada-paavi.blogspot.com/2006/05/xmncmxxii-aarasiyal-101.html
this has details
I told you so..
remember my earlier comment about ‘the little finger’ and how you lectured me to have an open mind?
My point is: whatever your qualifications are, if your heart is small and your mind is petty, you’re not going to have a following.
On the contrary, I know quite a few politicians, who are not clean by any standards, but who can cry seeing the less advantaged people.
Give me anyday a corrupt guy with a large heart than a ‘qualified’* guy with the narrow mind.
btw, there’s a world of difference between education and qualification…
A very good sum up of whatz hot and whatz not with LP….your example of Captain was very well timed…I felt the same….I thought LP was too early for people to trust…considering what captain could achieve…in almost a year…these guys were barely months old…so as u say they should start popularizing LP through all kinds of media immediately, and first show that all is not lost with LP and assure the first people who have shown faith with LP that they will deliver…. if you lose the first set of believers….that will reflect very bad…on your image….as a mainstream party..
The LP party induced a new ray of hope in us by putting forth firm and sharp ideals , proved everybdy( who said they lacked experience to lead the country) wrong by winning over 10,000 votes in some constituencies and finally let us down by displaying personal interests more than the urge to lead the conutry . Though repairable over a period of time , what has happened with the LP party was not expected out of them. Let us hope that youngsters who put their feet into the political agenda, first realize what they want and then enter .
NITYA
Lok Paritran – True that lack of experience in election campaigning has let them down… but then, the trend of political parties having their own TV channels th spread their manifesto is really outrageous.
Consider this: to advertise in SunTV, would Lok Paritran be granted the permission?
We dont have a democracy really. We are ruled by people in power who dont believe in giving a fair chance to others!
Have you seen ANY NEWS in Sun TV that is against DMK?
Never.
