Trying to make sense: taste, sight, mind, heart and soul

March 16, 2006 · by sudhishkamath

Today:
I got a tooth removed, another operated on for root canal treatment of cavity and another cavity filled in my wisdom tooth, all within two hours. Still dealing with post operation blues… but Yay! All my dental problems are fixed.. Except for one pending tooth implant and one cosmetic touch up, both of which can wait. Can’t eat anything hot or spicy. Ice-creams, here I come.

Yesterday:
Watched Crash yet again, this time in the movie hall. I’m tired of reviews, no mood to do that and suddenly, it seems like work. But Crash hits you like no movie ever has simply because it’s about something which all of us, at some level indulge in, knowingly or subconsciously… put people into boxes, on the basis of their race. One of the most awesomest screenplays to have ever been pulled off with great political correctness, razor-sharp lines and a no-holds barred approach in the narrative with an attitude. Super cool. Personal favourite: The Invisible Cloak episode.

Day Before:
Was in Kerala. Had been back visiting folks, bonding with cousins. Never realised I have 15 cousins. I’m the oldest at 29 and the youngest is hardly a year old. One of them is getting who is 22, is getting married. I met the young couple at her place for dinner the previous night and had a ball shooting them together on video. The funny thing for the rest of the folks was that all of us (me, him and her were speaking in English though we all spoke Konkani at home!). There you go, another bit to prove that culture is not always what you get from family. It’s what you get from people around you. Which is why by nature, change is inevitable.

A few days before that:
Watched Sudesi with bloggers Ravages,(it was his budday!) Prabhu, Harish and Incognito. Not sure how many of you read this bit I wrote on how the movie is his election manifesto. I was quite surprised by the political content in it. Despite the inherent trappings of a Captain movie, you couldn’t help noticing the good intentions of a simple well-meaning man with a poor technical team. It wasn’t as classy as ‘Muthalvan’ but the movie seemed to have its heart in the right place. Somewhat metaphorical of the real life situation. Captain might be a good man with good intentions. But is that alone enough to be a winner?

Now:
This one goes out to all my buddies:
Wrong person + Wrong time = Wake up, now! Move your ass outta there.
Right person + Right time = Live the dream, baby. May God bless you guys.
Right person + Wrong time = Wrong person. Move your ass outta there.
Wrong person + Right time = Fling. No comments. To each his own.
Whatever person + Whatever time = Friend.

Hmm. Interesting that you feel so deeply about Crash. The movie *really* hits you hard if you know the amount of racism that exists in the US. Of course, that’s the target of the movie, but I’m surprised that someone back home actually understands it. (Pethal, but adjust)

    sriram:
yeah I know what you mean… but i think crash isnt about racism or racial discrimination as such as much as it is about the stereotypes and preconceived notions that we have on the basis of a person’s race… the sort of stereotypes that are embedded so deep in our psyche that we dont even know… look at the so called anti-racist good guys in the movie… Don Cheadle and Ryan Philip… though they hate the whole racial discrimination, do it themselves.. either arm-twisted or unwittingly.
which is why every single character in the film, whether he behaves badly or not, whether he’s politically correct or not, STILL has his notions and stereotypical perception of a race…
replace the mexicans, black americans, persians and chinese with mallus, bongs, sethjis, sardars, gujjus and madrasis and you ll know what it’s as prevalent here than anywhere else… only that people are not attacked on the basis of race here, they are attacked on the basis of caste here…
race is the most relevant issue today in the world cuz wars are and have been fought on the basis of race…

I agree with you two about race being the most concurrent issue in the world today, its funny at the end of the day, on introspection each one of us has his or her own pre conceived notions!i guess that means a time for change i guess. at the risk ofs ounding cliche, the only constant thing in the world is change by itself!!!

Dont worry about the root canal Sudhish. It will be ok. I got it done 3 months back. It was painless procedure ofcourse you might have a slight swelling in the mouth but you will be fit and fine in a matter of hours. I am not sure how they do it in India but I got it done here in the US. The dentist was damn good but looted money like hell 😦

‘Comfort comes with a price indeed’! Sigh !

    absolutely…
and change needs to come from us…
the biggest argument the older generation has on culture and race is that if you don’t conform to your race and mix and breed with the ‘others,’ you will soon kill a culture which is already threatened by globalisation…
what they do not see are possibilities and freedom of modern day society to let us choose what we want… if a Telugu speaking boy and a Malayalam speaking girl living in Chennai hit it off get married and raise babies, the kid might probably speak a lot of english alright but also learn Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi because we still like to swear with the choicest of native words…
So how is there a corruption? Isnt there an enrichment when you embrace different cultures?

    anusha:
hey thanks, im recovering fine… just a lil drowsy with all those pain killers… 🙂

    1$ saint:
Just left a comment in your post… Like i said there, you’re no ghai and im no varma, we’ll do better someday…
and doesnt it always begin with Whatever person and whatever time?
And then transforms into one of the other situations… so if you have whatever person plus right time, keep at it till you figure out if its the right person or the wrong person… 🙂 All the best mate…
    Another cliche I heard somewhere:
You don’t choose someone you can live with, you choose someone you cannot live without… so Im not sure what good is a whatever person…

Point accepted. But a small change in the last line. Wars aren’t fought cuz of race. The root cause is mainly religion. What say?

Actually I am not keen on Captain’s movies or reviews but someone told me that Sudhish has penned down a hilarious review…so wanted 2 read that !

Btw have u seen the Narasimma scene in which the captain says
“If a person touches current, he gets shock, whereas if the current touches Narasimma, the current will get shock!”

I think tis the best punch delivery of the millenium…wonder who wrote the dialogues !

    Hee 🙂 hee 🙂
